A Question

I received a package in the mail today that I ordered off the big auction site.  I noticed when I opened the box that the shipping for the whole thing was more than I paid for the item and shipping combined.  So, the seller was out money for the deal.  Now, the seller has not contacted me, but I feel that I should compensate the seller since they miscalculated the shipping costs (the seller is a new seller).  What do you think?  Should I email the seller and offer to make up the difference in the shipping costs?

Thanks for your thoughts.

  1. I think that would be a really kind thing to do. I have lost some money when I was a new seller on Etsy. You are not required to of course, but it might be a really nice gesture.

  2. Okay it would be a nice gesture (linda is the nicest lady around :))

But it's part of the game and it is a learning oppurtunity for the sellers. I have been there, not fun but I learned a lot from it. They probably didn't wrap and weight the item and they guessed a shipping price.

So whatever you do keep us posted. I have a feeling you're going to offer them money, because you're mighty nice too! :)

  3. If you are really happy with the item, then just send some more money, don't offer. It'll be a wonderful surprise for the seller. :) And yes, I've done that, too. Many times.

  4. I would not hesitate to compensate the seller. It may be a learning experience, but there is no need for it to be an unpleasant one for the seller. He/she will be very thankful, I am sure.

  5. I agree with the above. It's unfortunate for all involved, though. The seller should have done a better job with shipping. You are now in possession of an item worth more than you were expecting to pay. While you are not required to pay more, it is a nice gesture. Perhaps split the difference, since you shouldn't be punished for their mistake.

  6. I've done that before in my early days as a seller, and you definitely don't have to, but I agree it would be a nice gesture.

  7. Hi! Found you over at Mick's place. I had this happen to me many times when I was a new eBay seller. And every time I would kick myself for being so dumb. Of course no one ever returned any money to me. I'm sure the person would be greatful as I assure you no one else will be returning the money.
