Refrigerator Graveyard

I was out at the old family farm last winter, and stumbled across these vintage beauties, slowly returning to the earth.  Apparently at some point they had been in my grandparent's house, many, many years ago.  They actually have stuff stored in them.  I need to go back this winter, when the snakes are not active, and see what is in them for sure.  I am actually planning on removing the doors from them to use for a future project.  We'll see if it ever gets done.  What I'm wanting to do with them is to use them as closet doors in the office that I would like to build on someday.  I think they would also be great to use as kitchen pantry doors if you were renovating a kitchen.  One way or the other, they will come back with me when I visit the old farm this winter!

  1. My husband loves to sandblast stuff--wonder if I could find a fridge graveyard somewhere down here since I would LOVE to have something like those beauties if only for storage. I'd paint it turquoise, of course!

  2. It looks like a graveyard, indeed! Happy to know that you'll be reviving them soon. Looking forward to seeing your creation!

  3. I can't remember where, but several years ago when I was out-of-town, I saw a clothing store where the changing room doors were 1940s-50s refrigerator doors. It's cool that you'll be recycling them.

  4. Wow...that is creepy but cool. What's inside?

  5. Did you check inside to make sure Dracula wasn't taking a little nap inside one of them?

If you go back, remember to whittle yourself a couple of stakes, just to be sure.

  6. There are two or three other fridges where these two are. One of them had an old portable TV in it which quit working and somehow ended up in the fridge. I believe that the GE fridge, the one in the top picture had a pink interior with the cool revolving shelves. I know that one of the fridges had this feature and it also had the foot pedal feature that you could step on and open the door when your hands were full so that you didn't have to put things down. It was a really cool fridge, and must have been very nice in it's day. I like the raised detail down the center of the door on the Kelvinator (the one in the bottom photo).

No Dracula, but I wouldn't be surprised to find snakes under them. I'm not really ready for another run-in with a Blue Racer or even a black snake for that matter.

  7. And... of course you know that they're incredibly dangerous with their doors on like that. If you get the chance, take the doors off even if you don't think of a use for all of them.

I painted mine red. Of course.
