A Small Town Responds To Unwanted Guests

I know most (if not all) of my readers have heard about the disgusting acts of a church congregation from Topeka, Kansas.  They picket and protest the funerals of fallen soldiers.  Yesterday, we had a funeral in our town for a soldier who died in Iraq.  The disgusting church, which I will not name here as I don't want people to find my blog when they search for the church (please do not name them in your comments, either), jumped in and made arrangements to protest at the funeral.  Now, I don't know how many of my fellow readers are fortunate enough to live in a small town, but they are the most wonderful places.  The townspeople, upon discovering the funeral would be picketed, immediately organized themselves.  Many thanks to the Patriot Guard Riders who helped with this event.

I would estimate that somewhere between 1500 and 2000 people showed up in support of the family.  Many people came in from neighboring towns.  The whole goal was to block the protesters from the view of the family.  The townspeople were incredibly successful, with many thanks to the city.  The city assigned them to an area where the funeral home could be seen, but where they could be blocked by other people.  The city also only allowed them a protest permit for the minimum amount allowable under law, 45 minutes.  They could start and 12:15 and must be finished and gone by 1:00, which is the time that the funeral began.  I can tell you, from the funeral home, all views of these disgusting people were blocked, and the family did not see them.

I also love the fact that the restaurants and other businesses in town refused service to them, and from what I have heard, the local motels refused to allow them rooms when they called.  There were signs that read "we reserve the right to refuse service to anyone" all over town.

My heart swells with pride for the way that the town stood up to these people.  There were police everywhere, and the state police were in town as well.  The people came, did their protest in vain, and left.  The following pictures do no justice to the sheer number of people lining the streets along the funeral home (I'm not a great photographer, and all I had with me was my cell phone camera).

Movie Friday: The Rocky Horror Picture Show

That's right.  My favorite movie for the Halloween season (and many other times of the year).  The cult classic.

Puts me in the mood to do the Time Warp!

This 1975 film celebrates it's 35th anniversary this year.  You can view the official fan club site here.

The following plot summary is from Wikipedia:

"The story, narrated by a criminologist, tells the tale of newly engaged couple, Brad Majors and Janet Weiss, who find themselves lost and with a flat tire on a cold and rainy, late November evening. Seeking a phone with which to call for help at a nearby castle, Brad and Janet discover a group of strange and outlandish people who are holding an Annual Transylvanian Convention. They watch, still wet from the rain, as the Transylvanians, servants, and a tap dancing groupie dance the "Time Warp", the film's signature song.
They are soon swept into the world of Dr. Frank-N-Furter, a bizarre and self-proclaimed "sweet transvestite from Transsexual, Transylvania". The ensemble of convention attendees also include servants Riff Raff, his sister Magenta, and a groupie named Columbia.

Frank claims to have discovered the "secret to life itself". In a scene inspired by the classic Frankenstein films, his creation, Rocky Horror, is brought to life. The ensuing celebration is soon interrupted by Eddie, an ex-delivery boy, partial brain donor to Rocky, and Columbia's implied lover, who rides out of a deep freeze on a motorcycle. In a jealous rage, Frank corners him and slaughters him with an ice axe. He then departs with Rocky to a bridal suite off of the laboratory.
Brad and Janet are shown to separate bedrooms, where each is visited and seduced in turn by Frank, posing as the opposite. Janet, upset and emotional, wanders off to look for Brad, whom she discovers is with Frank via a television monitor. She then discovers Rocky, cowering in his birth tank, hiding from Riff Raff, who has been tormenting him. While tending to Rocky's wounds, Janet seduces him, while Magenta and Columbia watch from their bedroom monitor.

After discovering that his creature is missing, Frank, Brad, and Riff Raff return to the lab, where Frank learns that an intruder has entered the building. Dr. Everett Scott, Brad and Janet's old high school science teacher, has come looking for his nephew, Eddie, but Frank suspects Dr. Scott of working for the government investigating UFOs. Upon learning of Brad and Janet's connection to Scott, Frank suspects them of working for him.

Rocky and the guests are served dinner, which they soon realize has been prepared from Eddie's remains. Janet runs screaming into Rocky's arms and is chased through the halls of the castle by a jealous Frank. Janet, Brad, Dr. Scott, Rocky, and Columbia all meet in Frank's lab, where Frank captures them with the Medusa Transducer, transforming them into living statues. They are then forced to perform a live cabaret floor show.
The performance is interrupted by Riff Raff and Magenta, who stage a coup and announce their plan to return to the planet of Transsexual in the galaxy of Transylvania. In the process, they kill Columbia, Rocky, and Frank. They release the humans, Brad, Janet, and Dr. Scott, and then depart by lifting off in the Castle itself."

One thing that I really found interesting is that the movie is still in limited release 35 years after its premier, making it the longest-running theatrical release in film history.

Just a word of warning though, this movie is not for everyone!

I Love Surprises

At one of the auctions I attended over the weekend, I purchased a box with numerous old copies of Better Homes and Gardens ranging from the 1950s to the 1970s.  I'd say there is somewhere between 18 and 24 magazines in the box.  I was digging through the box when I got home, pulling them all out, and when I got the last one out, there on the bottom of the box, under them all was this!

This large book What a home should be was published by the National Plan Service and is copyright 1957.  It is printed up with the name of the local lumberyard (which is still in business).  Inside are several different house plans.  Several of them even show different elevations to show how the plans for the same house can go from colonial-type styling to modern styling, to everything in-between.  Great versatility in style for each plan offered.

Looking for a cozy small ranch house?  Look no further.

A contemporary split level?  It's got that as well!

More ranch styles, I love flat roof ranch houses (although around here, a flat roof is a recipe for disaster!).

I love the huge chimney in the first photo above, and the beautiful stone shown in the second photo.

The book also featured several interior design ideas.  I really liked this pink and blue bathroom.  The floating cabinets, the pink tile that goes from the floor up the window wall, continuing the blue and light pink design.

Needless to say, I have spent quite a bit of time going through this book (I haven't shared a fraction of what is in it).  Maybe I'll go through the old Better Homes and Gardens magazines eventually!  I'm actually looking at house plans, dreaming of building a new house from a mid-century plan.  Maybe someday I can make that dream come true...complete with salvaged and restored metal kitchen cabinets, and a salvaged pink, blue, light green, or yellow bathroom set (or two)!

Hocus Pocus

I have my favorite movie for the Halloween season coming up on Friday, but I couldn't overlook Hocus Pocus, and I'm out of Fridays!  So, here it is, the 1993 classic starring Bette Middler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy as the Sanderson sisters.

Tornadoes?

Ah, life in the midwest.  Tornado watch until 6:00 AM.  Gotta love living in tornado alley.  Usually tornadoes are only a threat in Spring.  Oh well, I can't think of a part of the U.S. that doesn't have some type of weather or natural disaster to worry about, be it hurricanes, blizzards, or earthquakes.

I Love Three Day Weekends!

Thanks to having Parent-Teacher Conferences until almost 8:30 Thursday evening, school was closed on Friday.  I love getting to sleep in on Friday and Saturday!

I spent Friday afternoon and part of my day Saturday at some estate auctions.  The auction season is going to start winding down before too long, so I'm trying to get my fix in before it's over.  The sale of the year is next Saturday, and I have my eye on a few things there.  It's going to bring a big crowd as it is full of antiques (the lady was 96 years old, had lived in the house since she married, and it had been in her husband's family a long time before they married).  The house has been in the same family since it was built, I believe, and many of the pieces in the house have been there long before the lady the sale is for lived in it.  Sadly, the lady had no children, and the amazing things in her estate will be scattered to the wind.  We'll see if I'm successful in getting the three things that I'm interested in.  I've been saving up my pennies for a long time.

This past weekend, I picked up a few pieces.  The above lamp is between 3 and 4 feet tall.  I love the style.  The good: great style and I picked it up for $1.  The bad: the lady that owned it was a smoker (not that there is anything wrong with that) and it has a strong smoke smell.  Not sure how to tackle removing the smell from the shade.  Any ideas?

Can anybody tell me what these bottles are for?  They have glass stoppers in the top.  The one on the left has gold and turquoise cats on it.  They are almost sickeningly cute.  Not really my style.  The one on the right has a great turquoise and gold spear / arrow type design.  I much prefer the more geometric style of this piece.  They were sold as a pair for $1.50.

This little Hazel Atlas bowl did not look like this when I bought it.  The design had turned a green/black color.  Thanks to Bar Keepers Friend, it now looks like it did when it was new.

And of course, there were a few pieces of Pyrex to pick up as well.  This yellow 2 1/2 quart square bowl was a must.

Two 8 1/2 inch pie plates were on the list to pick up as well.  This is my first piece of pink Pyrex.  I have several pieces of the lime green.  It is one of my favorite Pyrex colors.

Lastly, the above Mod Kitchen 1 1/2 quart casserole came in the mail last week.  It is the first thing that I have purchased from the online Goodwill auction site.  It was filthy when it arrived, with baked on food on the outside.  However, a good soaking and a good scrubbing with Bar Keepers Friend made it look like new!

The eBay Saga: Chapter Conclusion

I am happy to report that today I finally got my return shipping charges refunded for the bowl that the seller got mixed up.  I also received a refund from the seller of the mixing bowls that arrived broken.  I requested that since half of the bowls arrived undamaged that I would be happy to receive half of the purchase price back.  I didn't mess with asking for a shipping refund.  The seller was happy with my request to keep the two unbroken bowls and receive a 50% refund, and I'm happy that I got some money back out of it all.  So ends this chapter.  I love happy endings!

Ups and Downs

Finally received the last piece to my Delphite mixing bowl set.  The little 1 1/2 pint bowl is the one that has caused all of my eBay frustration recently.  Whatever happens with finishing getting the mix up resolved, the completed set looks great.

I really like the way that the blue looks with that yellow tablecloth. 

Then, I had a bit of a heartbreak yesterday.  I was so excited about the Primary Pyrex mixing bowl set that I bought last week on eBay.  It was a great deal.  Shipping was the same price as I have paid for other mixing bowl sets on eBay.  Still, well, just look...

The green and yellow were crushed into mosaic pieces.  The blue and red bowl look great.  The biggest heart breaker?  The set was one of the original sets, marked without any numbers on the bottom.  Sigh.  It would have been great...still haven't heard from the seller as to what can be done to resolve the issue.  I did finally hear from the seller of the bowl mix-up last night.  I'm not getting my hopes up, but I think that I may get my return shipping money back.

The eBay Saga Continues...

...with a new chapter!

I received the correct bowl today in the mail.  Thank goodness.  Still have not been reimbursed for having to ship back the incorrect one.  I am thankful that I sent it with delivery confirmation so that I know she received it today.  I sent her a reminder that I would like to be reimbursed for shipping it back to her as she had agreed to do in the last email I received from her.  How long should I give her before opening an issue with eBay?  I don't know if I'll have a leg to stand on, but I have saved copies of all of the communication that I have had with the seller, so I'm going to give it a try.

Then, to add insult to injury, I have a new Pyrex eBay saga beginning.  I recently bought a set of the Primary Color nesting bowls for an amazing price.  They arrived today, however they were shipped in a large flat rate box, and not enough packing material.  The only two bowls to survive the journey were the little blue bowl and the little red bowl.  Too bad, as when they arrived I realized that they are marked as the oldest sets are.  Grrr...we'll see how this turns out.

Then, a nice surprise when I got home...the nosy neighbor that I mentioned in my post yesterday was looking through the contents of the bed of my pickup when I got home.  I was not thrilled to turn onto my block and see him looking in there.  The only thing that he saw were a couple of spare tires...but still, he had to walk up my driveway to see.  I did at least catch him off guard and he was very flustered when he realized I was home and pulling in the driveway.  Nosy old coot, leave my stuff alone!

Dinah Shore

"Dinah Shore sings her heart out in this theatrical commercial for the 1953 Chevrolet BelAir. Possibly the only film that contains the complete "See The U.S.A. In Your Chevrolet" lyrics."

 Woo Hoo!  115 horsepower!  I think I have shared pieces of this film before, especially the part in the second film where Dinah Shores sings the famous "See the U.S.A. in Your Chevrolet" song.  However, I haven't seen the full thing, and it's kind of interesting to see the way they show how car scenes are filmed with the illuminated background inside the studio.  I think that it's funny that the ventipanes shown on the back doors aren't an available option, as stated at the end of video two.

What a Weekend...

I found absolutely nothing vintage this weekend.  Oh well.  How about an update on what's going on here on the loop?  Saturday morning I set out to go to some garage sales.  I pulled up to one and the lady running the sale didn't like the way I parked and asked me to move, so I did, to which she told me I moved the car too much.  I told her that I would just leave, and I did.

I took the Pyrex bowl that I got through the eBay mix up to the post office...and still haven't been paid for the return shipping.  I'll give her another 24 hours then I'm going to contact the seller, and then talk to eBay.  I doubt if I get anywhere, but I'll give her a headache to deal with if nothing else.  All I want is what I bought and to be refunded for having to pay for the return shipping on an item that I didn't order.

Mom and Dad went to visit Mom's sister and her husband in Kansas City, so I got to dog sit for them.  Their dog has really taken a liking to me in the past few months...they've had him almost 7 years now.  He's always been friendly, but lately he acts like he's my dog...and he doesn't live with me.

An elderly neighbor from down the street came by while I was cleaning out the planter box Saturday afternoon.  He is hard of hearing and likes to talk loud.  He also likes to gossip about my neighbors...loudly.  I felt like I was trapped.  I hope none of the neighbors heard him.

Saturday evening I went out to dinner with my grandma.  She turned 90 this summer.  She's quite the amazing lady.

Sunday morning brought church and Sunday School.  After church I went home and took a nap.

Sunday evening when Mom and Dad got home we all went over to my sister's house for family dinner.  When I got back to the loop, there were two cop cars in front of my house - one of which was blocking my driveway.  (I really don't like turning the corner onto my block and finding cop cars in front of my house.  It brings back memories of coming home from Grandma and Granddad's when I was little to find flashing lights close to my parents house...the house 2 doors down had burnt down.)  I had no place to park, so I drove through the ditch (it's really shallow) and parked the car in the yard right in front of my door.  There was some type of domestic dispute going on at the house across the street.  It's a rental and the owner is a friend of mine that lives out of state.  I sent them a text to let them know that something was up, then settled in to watch the show.  Lots of cussing and door slamming.  About 45 minutes of packing stuff up in the house and loading it into one of the many vehicles that were there (I counted 5).  Then 3 of the cars left and the cops left and all was quiet.

Who says that life in a small town is quiet and boring?

More eBay Frustration

The saga of the incorrect Pyrex bowl shipment continues.  When I contacted the seller originally, she fell all over herself apologizing, told me that the person who bought the other bowl hadn't paid after a week, and that she still had the correct bowl and would ship it out the next day.  I told her that if she would provide a pre paid shipping label, I would be happy to ship the bowl I had to the buyer.  Upon which she said okay.  Originally she told me that she would cancel the other sale due to no pay and I could just keep the bowl.  As I said before, I already had that piece, so I didn't need it.  I had correspondence with the seller throughout the rest of the week, each day she told me that she was shipping the bowl out tomorrow (which tomorrow?  I have no clue after hearing the same thing for three or four days).  Then, she told me the buyer of the bowl I had in my posession had paid, and that person was in Canada.  So, she asked that I ship the bowl back to her, let her know how much it was, and she would refund my PayPal account.  I shipped the incorrect bowl yesterday morning, let her know how much it was, and even provided a tracking number so that she could see that it had been shipped.  That was more than 24 hours ago, and I have not heard anything from her.  Although, she has had 3 or 4 items sell on eBay since I let her know how much the return shipping is.  I doubt the fact that she has made sales has slipped her mind.  I'm fairly certain that she has been into her PayPal account to retrieve the money that other people have been sending her.  I guess I'm just frustrated, and have lost all confidence in this seller.  She has nearly 5000 feedback rating, with 99.4% being positive.  If this doesn't turn out well, her percentage will be going down a little.  Also, if this doesn't come out well, I'll post the name of the seller to give you all a warning about them.

This must be Pyrex weekend...

...on eBay...

Another piece that I have been watching (but not bidding on) is this casserole in the "Stems" pattern.  Now, if I could just find some of these unusual pieces at an estate auction...it would be a great way to make some money!  I am also thinking that people have begun to lose their minds...but then again, I am a pretty big penny pincher!

This must be one happy seller...

Has anybody else been watching this set of Pink Pyrex mixing bowls on eBay?  All I can say is WOW.  If I were that seller, I would be very happy right now!

Movie Friday: The Omen

Continuing with my Horror / Halloween type movies for the month of October, this week I wanted to feature the 1976 horror classic, The Omen.  Since seeing this movie, I have never been able to look at a child named Damien the same way again (and yes, I have met a child with that name).

Weekend Finds

Slim pickings this past weekend, which is a good thing.  I had plans Saturday morning, so no estate auctions to attend, and at the sale I attended Sunday afternoon, pickings were pretty slim.  I came home with two things.  There was more that I was interested in, but most everything at the sale was literally junk, and people weren't bidding, which made the sale move incredibly slow.  I didn't feel like waiting around another hour and a half to bid on a few vintage planters.

On to my finds.  The lamp is solid marble.  It's very heavy.  I'm actually hoping to resell it, as I am considering opening a booth in a local antique / collectible shop.  It is approximately 14 inches from the bottom of the base to the top of the socket.  It is great condition.  Anybody have any suggestions as what it might be worth?  This type of thing is beyond my area of knowledge.

I also found a great Pilleys Fine Dairy Products milk bottle.  I love the red and blue printing on the front and back of the bottle.  This bottle is a keeper.

In My Temporary Custody...

I'm happy to report that everything is going to be okay with my first eBay mix-up, which I blogged about last night. 

Which means, I am in temporary custody of this beautiful 1 1/2 quart Delphite Blue Pyrex mixing bowl.  Too bad I already have one...can't wait until my 1 1/2 pint bowl gets here from the mix-up!  That little 1 1/2 pint bowl will complete my set of Delphite mixing bowls!  Yay!

Uh oh...Possible First eBay Problem...

I've never had a single issue with purchases on eBay.  I'm talking over 10 years of buying on there...no problems...until now.  I purchased a Pyrex bowl, and the seller sent me the wrong one.  Hopefully the seller didn't ship my bowl to someone else.  Is it wrong for me to ask the seller to pay for the return shipping?  I don't think so, since it was their mistake.  To be fair...the bowl that I received was the same color...only it was advertised as a 1 1/2 pint, and I received a 1 1/2 quart, which was listed in a separate auction.  Guess we'll see how this plays out.  Oh well, I have 165 successful purchases...it had to happen at some point.  Anyway, I just emailed the seller.  I am upbeat that everything will be fine.

Another Fun Craigslist Find!

I love finding vintage furniture on Craigslist.  I am not in the market to buy, but the styles are so great.  This set is currently available for only $300!  What a steal (although not as big of a steal as my Hey-Wake set that I picked up for $170)!

According to the seller:

"1950's solid maple bedroom set from Roanoke, VA. Purchased new in the 1950's by my family. Solid construction in good shape. Includes double drawer dresser, two night stands, beveled mirror and head and foot board for full bed. Local pick up only."

Pyrex Sunday

Movie Friday: Psycho

For Movie Friday through the month of October, I'm going to be featuring some movies for Halloween.

I thought it fitting to start things off with some Alfred Hitchcock.  My all time favorite Hitchcock is "The Birds" but as I have already shared that one, I picked Psycho for this week.  I love these videos that Hitchcock made to promote his movies.  They're more than a trailer, he explains bits and pieces of the story to get you really hooked on what happened.

Becoming a Mid-Century Handyman

I now know that I can become a great mid-century handyman!  How, you may ask?  Well, I have a copy of the Better Homes and Gardens Handyman's Book!  I can do it all, now!  Now I can do all of the following things, thanks to this wonderful book, first printed in 1951 (although my copy dates to 1957).

I can:

1.  Use hand tools!
2.  Use power tools!
3.  Select appropriate building materials!
4.  Comprehend many different methods of fastening things together!
5.  Keep up to date on the most appropriate finishing techniques!
6.  Take care of my home's plumbing and wiring issues!
7.  Finish walls and lay many types of flooring!
8.  Add windows and doors - wherever I want them!  (Door in the ceiling?  I can do that now!)
9.  All of the exterior repairs and yardwork projects that any mid-century homeowner could desire!
10. Design my own household furniture and storage pieces!

11. I can now even care for my automobile and bicycle!

So, if you need something done, give me a ringy-dingy (as Lily Tomlin would say in character as Ernestine) and I'll grab my handyman book, my tool box, and be on my way over to really making a mess of things!

Oh, how I wish there was a good way to put sarcasm into written form.  It is a pretty neat book even with my poking fun at it.

Car Shopping...

...okay, not really.  The Buick and I are still happily united, with many adventurous miles ahead of us.  The old girl just rolled 60,000 miles.  Not bad for a 1996 model.

Anyway, these great vintage car commercials have caught my eye, and I thought they'd be a great way to cheer up a Tuesday (Wednesday's almost here...and it's all downhill from there!).

Choices, Choices

I was approached by a friend who is involved in our community theater seeking decorations for the set of their upcoming production.  The community theater is doing Father of the Bride, and they need wedding gifts to set around on the stage.  Wow, what to choose?  You can see in the photo above what I've come up with.

Let's see...top row: three Fire King baking / casserole dishes in the cornflower blue pattern, a pressed glass round platter / tray, a Fire King? milk glass divided relish dish / deviled egg plate, the Homer Laughlin platter that I got a couple of weeks ago, a pair of 24% lead crystal candle sticks, and the chip and dip set that I got last week.  Second row: 2 brand new sets of towels still with their original ribbons (does anybody else buy these things at Walmart when they go on clearance sale when the time comes to change colors?), the chrome Mixmaster Junior that I got last week, and a glass divided dish / serving plate.  Bottom row: a new in box 11 piece set of Anchor Hocking Prescut and a chrome cake carrier.

Wow!  That was hard!  I was going to throw in my new crock pot, but I use that for food day at work, so no Crock Pot for them.  Now, I just need to deliver it all to them and see if there is anything else that they are looking for that I may have.  (I do seem to have a little of everything!)

One of the things that I picked up last week at one of the estate auctions that I attended was a large serving bowl made by Universal Cambridge Potteries for Sears Roebuck and Co. in the Cat Tail pattern.  It was a good deal at $2, even with a small chip in the rim.  I love the pattern.  So, now there's something else to keep my eye out for at estate auctions (only if it's cheap!).  I used it last night as a mixing bowl to mix up some brownies, which I baked in my new 8 inch lime green Pyrex baker that I got at the same estate sale.

I checked eBay for other items in this pattern, and I'll have to say that there is quite an assortment.  Does anybody know when these were made?  If I were to make a guess based on the shape of the different pieces, I would guess 1940s.

Room By Room

Did any of you love the old HGTV show Room By Room?  It was always one of my favorites on HGTV because they worked on normal people's houses, doing things that normal people would do to their homes.  They were down to earth and not out of touch with society as many of the HGTV shows seem to be these days.  I became frustrated with HGTV after they started jumping on the reality show bandwagon.  (I did enjoy the first season of Design Star, though.)

Anyway, Matt Fox and Shari Hiller have a web page and a Facebook page.  From what I can tell reading through the posts on the Facebook page, they will have another show coming out soon.  Around the House with Matt and Shari will be airing on PBS.  Hey, if I could get a good TV antenna, I may be able to watch this one!  (I don't have cable...and don't really miss watching TV...I quit cable when I moved into the Shack, which was after HGTV became so addicted to reality shows).  Hmmm...I may have one of those aerial antenna's outside in my back yard!
