Vintage Glasses

Some of my favorite finds are free.  These glasses with the black lines and the gold starburst patterns are one of the freebies.  There are seven of them, I would assume that there were originally eight.  One of my coworkers retired a couple of years ago and moved out of state.  She and her husband cleaned out, had a big garage sale, and packed up to go.  These glasses were left over from her sale, so she hauled them up to work  with some other items to see if anyone wanted them.  I latched onto these as soon as I saw them.  How could anyone give up a set of glasses with such a great design?

These two glasses belonged to the above-mentioned coworker's mother.  She is in the nursing home and when the daughter was moving, the family moved mother to a new nursing home.  Moving brought up the extra chore of cleaning out the mother's house and selling it.  I bought these at the garage sale they had for her mother.

I remember this pair of glasses from my childhood.  My great-aunt (the one that I have inherited so many great things from, see my Pyrex mixing bowls in an earlier post) had these.  I remember using them as a child when we would go to visit.  I love the space theme on the glass on the left, and I am fairly certain that the one on the right is an old jelly jar glass.

I will tell you right now that my specialty is not identifying glassware, especially when it is unmarked.  Can anyone identify anything about the glasses above?

  1. I'm good on dinnerware and pottery, unfortunately not glassware--but you have some great stuff, especially those two tri-color tumblers. I wonder if you can help me--I just bought an RCA Victor console stereo combo at the Goodwill, model number is VJT-31 and Google led me to your blog--but I can't find the reference. Do you own one of these beauties????

  2. Christine, I have a RCA Victor VJT-31W That I bought recently. You can see it in this post from September 22: http://cul-de-sacshack.blogspot.com/2009/09/1968-rca-vjt31w-console-stereo-last.html

Is this like the one that you found? It's a great stereo!

  3. Michael, I cannot identify your glasses, but I love all of them. What I really love is everything I can see of your kitchen. I love the wooden window, the counter with the steel trim, stainless steel sink and the wall color too. (It looks avocado; is it?) All of the glasses look perfect in this kitchen.

  4. Yup--I have the same console, only MINE is the "before" and yours is the "after"! At least now I know what it's supposed to look like. It powers up and then emits the most incredibly loud SCREECH, so my husband has (reluctantly) agreed to take it apart and hopefully get it working properly. I paid $29.99 for it at Goodwill so you totally lucked out. And in going back through your September blogs, now I know who White Chevy is!!!!! I love it that someone MY age and someone YOUR age have the same interests, too.

  6. sumacsue - the paint color is very close to avocado, it is called "Brassy" from Sherwin-Williams - it is color chip "SW 6410". I love it. I am wanting to redo my kitchen though, I found the original paint color in one of the cabinets, a turquoise/aqua color, which I want to return the kitchen to. When that happens, the second bedroom is going to be painted in the Brassy color...I have even found a pair of vintage custom made drapes from 1970 to match them, which I need to have cut down to fit the bedroom windows.

  7. Thanks for the paint color information. That Brassy color would be good for a bedroom, and you can't go wrong with aqua in a kitchen. We painted our kitchen a light blue which now seems much too gray, and I have been thinking of repainting it in an aqua. Something fun to think about.
